I left the TV on last night for a change. ‘America’s Got Talent’ was on … and, for some reason, this diverse blend of dancers, musicians, magicians, acrobats, comedians and more … all competing to become ‘America’s top talent’ …
had me observing how our culture’s extreme focus on competition, perfection, and external validation — as the key primary indicator of worth — has dangerously and silently become critically spirit-compromising, life-limiting, and life-endangering.
An alarming overstatement? Hang on: The herd behavior of our media-driven populace may already be creating clear signs of life erosion that prove this is true.
So, Who is Leading?
Let’s look beyond the popular TV show — to explore what we each regard as deserving ‘talent’ -*- in ourselves, others, and life.
We claim to prize individuality, uniqueness, and diversity of expression and contribution as precious commodities …, yet our social and now self ‘sanctioning and approval system’ acknowledges and rewards as ‘fully most deserving’ only those few who truly stand out, outshine, and outperform the others. Being ‘average’ is now ‘a failure’ …, with unselected talented contestants, bachelors, bachelorettes, and 2nd place Olympians as ‘losers’ … who at times now feel as ‘disappointed failures’ for not being ‘the very best’.
What Has Happened:
While ‘continuous improvement’ and optimal or peak performance remain as ‘good things’, our competitive, ‘be #1’ focus has grown so extreme that ‘individual human spirits’ have suffered, lost momentum, and also faded … often without our own individual and collective awareness. Our regressive incremental loss of spirit is also a loss of life energy … and since ‘life’ is ‘energy’, a loss of ‘life’ is literally occurring as this energy loss happens. As conditions have become more difficult for many, the rallying call, “We’ve got Spirit, yes we do!”, is rarely heard.
Anyway, this is quite the life-compromising and unnoticed price to pay … as we blindly stride on … delaying, reducing, and sacrificing the experience of joy … in our quest to 1) ‘be the best’, 2) make joy contingent on outperforming many others, and 3) delay gratification while ‘progressing’ through the continually-narrowing funnel of competition..
Why This Matters:
Our commitment to ‘superiority through competition and winning’
is overshadowing our commitment to ‘Life -*- through equality and acceptance’. Yikes!
Aspects of our public culture have transitioned from
Prizing one another’s natural, authentic ‘no two snowflakes are alike’ unique ‘all-as-one’ life-deserving beauty and nature … (i.e. Life’s most perfect gift of all is what you display as you attempt to do your best -*- authentically, with the best positive intentions …)
‘This often is simply not good enough’ (i.e. It often won’t get you ‘the prize’ in life after all).
Along with those who still love to compete are some who once did and now simply follow. Others are less inclined to nurture and fully display their unique evolving skills and deserving human spirit.
Only you can decide what the friendly competition on a well-intended TV show reveals … and you can sense for yourself in life when you and others prize ‘only the most perfect of all performers’ as more deserving than ‘unique existing and evolving talent’.
